Is Frost on Your Roof Good or Bad?

The cold weather can make homeowners fearful. For one, the chilly atmosphere increases home energy costs. Different parts of the home are more prone to damage, such as the roofing system, windows and decks. And, there’s water almost everywhere, which can accumulate on certain spots and allow the growth of mold and vegetation, which may require roof repair services.

Then, of course, frost will appear on your roofing system. But is frost really one of the roofing problems you have to worry about during the cold season? Let’s find out!

It Is Basically Water

Water is the arch nemesis of the roofing system. If there’s water, then there’s a great possibility of rotting or leaks. But how about frost? Does it automatically mean water damage? It’s not necessarily a problem because the roofing system is created to withstand such harsh conditions. However, you can use it as a way to gauge if your home insulation is working properly or not. If the heat is leaking out of your attic, the frost would melt. But if frost is present, it means you have good insulation.

What Should You Do?

Don’t worry. A roof replacement project is usually not required for these types of problems. You can hire a local roofing contractor to look at your roof and attic insulation. Maybe the holes on your attic or roof deck are causing the frost to melt. Identifying the areas where the heat is escaping will not only reduce energy cost, but also prevent future damage.
