The 4 Ways Wind Damage on Your Home Can Occur

Whether it’s a commercial or residential building, wind damage can happen. There are instances when wind damage becomes an unavoidable occurrence, especially during a particularly bad storm. Depending on the extent of the damage, it may require a simple fix, but, if you’re unlucky, you may have to get a new roof.

Since you can never be too careful, it’s vital that you know just exactly how can wind damage occur in your home.

  1. Debris – One of the common culprits of damage during windy days is blown debris. These pieces of debris (also called missiles) are often tree limbs, parts of neighboring roofs and anything else that can be thrown around by a strong gust of wind. Depending on the way it lands, it can puncture or dent your roofing system so do a quick inspection of your home once the winds have died down.

  2. Quality and Installation – For your roofing system, the quality of the materials and how they were installed play a big part. Poor quality or improperly installed roofs make for easy targets by strong winds as opposed to roofing systems that are properly installed with the right materials. With that in mind, if you see that a bad storm is on its way, hire a roof repair expert to inspect it for you.

  3. Material Condition – Materials in poor condition are basically guaranteed to receive some form of damage from the wind than those in top shape. Your roof may be deteriorating without your knowledge so inspect it every once in a while and repair or replace it as needed.

  4. Age – Depending on the overall age of your home or roofing system, it’s possible that it may sustain more damage than expected. If your home’s fixtures have aged significantly, get them repaired or replaced as soon as you can to minimize wind damage.

When Does Wind Damage Occur?

Wind damage doesn’t occur on a normal day or due to a single gust of strong wind. Wind damage will only occur during specific weather events, such as strong storms and tornadoes. Depending on which occurs in your area, the extent of the damage may vary. For instance, your home may be relatively safe from damage while your roof may sustain simple cuts and damage from flying debris. Tornadoes are a different story, however, as there’s a high chance that your roofing system can be torn from your home.
