How Hail Affects Your Roof, and What You Can Do About It

Hail damage is a lot more subtle compared to standard storm damage. Inexperienced homeowners often do not see the need for urgent roof repair until it’s too late. Here’s how hail can affect your roof and what you can do about it.

The Common Signs of Hail Damage

Hail damage has many forms, but most are related to damage caused by physical impact. It’s important to understand that this leads to other types of damage that are entirely preventable if you know how to recognize it and call your contractor as soon as possible. The following are the types of hail damage:

Loose Granules — Granules that come loose and get mixed in with the rainwater runoff is normal, but a lot of it can get knocked loose by hail. If it didn’t immediately rain after a hailstorm, try spraying the roof with a garden hose with enough water to simulate moderate rainfall. Does the runoff contain a lot more granules? If it does, then you need to have your roof inspected by your roofer.

Dents — Large hailstones can cause craters that are wide yet shallow, which may not be easily recognizable on more textured roofing. If you notice larger than usual hailstones on the ground, don’t take any chances. The damage caused by baseball-sized hailstones can lead to extensive roof repair, if not a premature roof replacement.

Loose, Broken or Missing Shingles — In addition to dents and loose granules, hail impact can be strong enough to crack or dislodge entire shingles. This merits immediate attention as it may expose the underlayment layer.

What You Should Do If Your Roof Is Damaged by Hail

If your roof is still within warranty, consult your warranty paperwork, and see if there are any provisions for impact damage. Some roofing systems feature coverage against impact damage. If it’s not covered, your homeowner insurance policy may cover the repair costs after deductibles.

You will nevertheless need your roofing contractor to thoroughly inspect your roof. Your trusted roofing contractor should be able to provide a detailed report that includes an estimate of the repair costs.
