Roofing Trends: Product Performance and Energy Efficiency

Roofing materials have come a long way over the years. While aesthetics remain an important aspect of roofing material selection, homeowners now look for product performance and energy efficiency when planning their next roof replacement

Product Performance

More homeowners are becoming aware of the benefits of investing in durable roofing systems. Manufacturers like GAF have given homeowners more choices in terms of roofing systems that feature resistance against high winds, wind-driven rain, and hail impact.

We refer to them as “roofing systems” because these roofing systems factor in other components. The traditional asphalt-soaked paper underlayment has evolved into membranes that wick unwanted moisture from the roof deck while keeping moisture from getting inside. Adhesive-reinforced shingles minimize the damage caused by wind, reducing the chances of extensive roof repair after a storm. Given the savings in repair cost as well as better insurance rates, homeowners can reap the benefits of high-performing roofing systems over its lifespan.

Energy Efficiency

Energy costs are continuously on the rise, which is why energy-efficient home improvements are fast becoming a necessity more than a luxury. Energy-efficient roofing, also referred to as “cool roofs,” are outer roofing materials with reflective properties. They reflect heat from the sun and help reduce the heat absorbed through the roof. Combined with a properly insulated attic, less heat trickles down to the indoor living space, which helps reduce indoor cooling requirements, resulting in lower energy bills.

A cooler attic also has other benefits. For instance, the roof structure is not exposed to trapped heat in the attic. This makes the roof less susceptible to warping caused by extreme heat, therefore prolonging its service life. A roofing system designed for long-term performance would also have proper ventilation at the ridge and soffit to reduce trapped heat and moisture, which can also prevent ice dams during winter.
